Why Medusa? The Story Behind Our First Collection

Most people know Medusa as a monster: snakes for hair, a stare that turns men to stone, a villain a hero has to kill.

But there's an older version of her story that doesn't get told enough.

In the Roman poet Ovid's telling, Medusa was a young woman who was assaulted by the god Poseidon inside Athena's temple. She did nothing wrong. Yet she was the one who got punished. She was transformed into a creature so feared that no one could look at her. The man who hurt her faced no consequences at all.

Sound familiar?

For thousands of years, Medusa's story was used as a warning. Today, women are taking it back. Medusa has become a symbol for survivors: a woman who was harmed, blamed, and cast out, and who became powerful anyway. Her gaze isn't a curse. It's protection. It's a woman saying, you will not do this to me again.

That's why she's the face of our first collection at The Black Cat USA.

Where your purchase goes

10% of profits from every Medusa collection sale goes into our Support Women's Freedom Fund, dedicated to ending child marriage in the United States. Many people are shocked to learn that child marriage is still legal in most US states.

When you wear Medusa, you're wearing a story of survival, and you're helping girls who need someone in their corner right now.

Why I started The Black Cat USA

I started The Black Cat USA because I needed work with a social purpose, a business for good, and a better future for my daughter and myself. Women and children have been through enough! Every piece we sell helps raise funds for female empowerment non-profits. We need to make a difference and force change, now!

What this blog is about

This is just the beginning. Every week here, I'll share practical ways women can protect and empower themselves: money, safety, boundaries, and the forgotten women of history who showed us how.
